I have posted the info on the TTT forum in the general discussion area and in the vintage discussion area, a thread that people can post on what they might bring in terms of lanterns. Lee and I are putting the light up together, so please read the following info. It will help with organization and potential "brain damage"
Here's the deal:
We will be lighting up all OPERATING lanterns on Friday night. The exact location hasn't been determined as we have no idea on just how many will show, where trailers will be parked etc, and photo opportunities...
Make sure you have your lantern in operating condition. That's mandatory! You've got 6 months to get it up and working and familiarize yourself with it's operation. Many of us will have upwards of 10 or so to deal with on our own. Don't bring a lantern that you aren't familiar with or is a "parts" or "beater" lantern. Chances are, it won't get fixed. If you borrow one from a neighbor at home...make sure you know how to run it.
If you are going to participate, you will supply your own fuel, mantles, parts or whatever you may need. You will light it and be responsible for maintaining it's constant burn throughout the event. So remember where you placed it in the group. My experience has been...if you get it running...make sure you've got plenty of fuel in it and it's well pumped up. Short on fuel and pressure has been the most likely problem in the past.
If you have multiples of lanterns, group them so that any fiddling you may need to do, you can minimize the running around.
Tag your lantern with an ID, so that there is no discussion about whose is whose after the fact.
Keep in mind that these are very HOT! The vents will run 500F and it's sitting on top of a pint of gas under pressure, so please watch your children and don't bring pets to the event. I don't mean to be a hard A$$ on it, but having had my hand on fire from one before, accidents can happen and I'm sure the insurance for the IRG won't be covering anything like this. There are 250 people and everyone needs to use good judgment and common sense.
SAFETY is the keyword!!!!
Also...please understand that many of these items may be in the neighborhood of 90 years old. So if it's not yours, don't be jockeying it around and moving stuff that's not yours. Ask the owner if you want to move it when setting up. Set up will take some time.
The first group will be the white gas/kerosene PRESSURE lanterns, to include table lamps and other white gas fired lights only. This is the group that will count towards a record that is recognized by Coleman.
The 2nd group will include propane lanterns and will be added to the first group.
The final group will include battery lanterns and other wick type kerosene lights.
The goal is to reach a record, and rumor has it that 122 were done at a Coleman gathering back east just recently.
The final total with all lanterns will go towards a "Teardropping" burn record.
If you have multiples, you might think of making up a stick with some notched grooves in it so that you can haul a load of them running at one time. It will save trips back and forth to your campsite if that's where you are firing them all up.
I'm sure that if everyone pays attention and uses common sense a safe and fun burn, hopefully setting a record will happen. Doug and Lee
