We cooked up this idea and it'll be a lot of fun!

A teardrop derby!  Gravity powered trailers down a 24' track.

the rules are simple.  Trailer body must be 4" x 8", tongue must go down the track first, can't run backwards, must have 3 wheels, weigh 16 oz or less.  Build it out of whatever you want.  No motors, rubberbands, chemical engines.

Exact dimensions on the track width will be forthcoming.  The track isn't built yet.  Lee is working on that.

It's all in fun, prizes will mostly be bragging rights but will include overall winner, best crash, silliest paint job or theme.  Like Nascar, there will be a happy hour, practice session prior to the race.

Hope everyone can make something...you've got like 11 weeks.  Silly entrants are encouraged as well as  gambling.

 Ah, the things that come up around the campfire. This looks like it will be a welcome new addition to the event.  The guys around the fire came up with some ideas to make it a race to remember!  And believe me, it will have some top competitors vying for bragging rights to this contest.  If you have questions, ask here on this topic thread, or PM Doug for more info.  I hope you'll be able to build one in advance to bring in July.

Yes, it should be going downhill...although it was discussed whether it would flatten out, or have a slight dip toward the end.  What'd ya decide, Lee?

Doug, Please clarify. Does the body have to be 4" X 8", or 4" X 8" overall?

Lee decided that the overall dimensions of the tear will be 4x8 inches and that will include the tongue. You guys were there at the discussion and I'm sure you know how crazy it was.  Remember, it doesn't have to be proportional in size, so if it looks wide for the length, so be it.  Just like a real tear, do what you want.  I'm sure that anyone that shows up with one that doesn't fit the "official" rules will still be able to run.  The real hard rule will be that if it doesn't fit in the track, it won't be able to run.

The whole thing is to have a good time, be stupid and silly, have some fun, race and crash some tears, just like when a lot of us were kids!  I'm looking forward to the pre-race interviews ala any Nascar drivers.  I'll have to look around and see if I can come up with some junk to create a trophy out of.

Sue, since I know how you like to "buck" the system and "question authority" your tear will be required to go uphill!!!

Rich...bragging rights are available for the best crash, so explosives and or any flammables may play a part.  Let's not anyone lose an eye over it however!     Doug

Rich...the possibility of a chicane was also discussed.  Could make for some interesting crashes!  I'll get with Lee on that and make sure that it can be a removable thing for actual competition vs. serious mayhem!  Doug

I'm thinking something along the lines of a carbon fiber frame with a kevlar over foam body.  And for the serious mayhem, quick change wheels so I can add rims with spikes like Charleston Heston had to deal with in the chariot race in Ben Hur!!

I'm kinda partial to the serious mayhem thing. I was the guy that used to spend hours building plastic models and a week or 2 later take them out and blow them up!!!      :twistedevil:
