We stumbled upon an expert!
Kevin & I signed up for a dutch oven class and the instructor has agreed to put on a dutch oven clinic for us on Saturday morning, the 29th... We'll be doing our Dutch Oven Pot-Luck later that day. (It get's better...)
In talking with the instructor, Marvin R... he became curious as to why all my questions...
Once I informed him as to the nature of our event, he got excited, because it just so happens... He just got his hands on a set of Popular Mechanics plans from 1947 to build a teardrop! (It gets even better than this...)
During our discussion, the underground barbeque pit at Pamplin Grove came up...
Turns out that Marvin is the fellow who does all the underground barbequeing for the City of Fortuna!
He has agreed to do an underground barbeque for us as well!!!...
That's if we have enough people sign up to be able to cover the cost.
I hope to schedule this one for Friday, the 28th and I'm very optimistic about this one!
The registration fee has already been set, so we can't go back and change anything there and I don't want to add any more fees into the mix, so I'm counting on sheer numbers to be able to pull this off.
If it does happen, I would like to have a donation can set up during dinner and pass that on to Marvin, as a way of saying Thank You.
So what do you guys think of this???

Life can be fun sometimes, can't it?  I love it how coincidences come to be!  The flyer came to my school from our local Park & Rec division advertising a new class on Dutch Oven Cooking.  So, upon calling and finding out a staff member was doing it, and that it was right up our alley and in our neck of the woods, the cogs started turning and I put Dean in charge of finding out more about this.  What a bit of good luck that the timing was so perfect and, it goes to show you once more how  captivating and addictive Teardropping can become.

Great score Dean, and now we need to line up plenty of wood for the pit.

Yahoo...this gathering is really gonna have GOOD FOODS.   :lol: :wink:

We'll have to post what dish you'd most like to see made, and what you will bring to the Saturday potluck if you are a Dutch Oven Dude or Dudette.

Excellent bit of coincidence!!
Norma and I will be looking forward to the DO class.
Uh..what exactly is an underground BBQ? Is that like when you  cook a whole pig in a pit? Are there ever any variations?
It would be great to have someone come and cook for the whole group, and taking up a collection for the chef sounds right to me.

Dear Paul,

The pit is a BIG hole in the ground which you put your wood and meat into.  Depending on the country it is cooked in, there will be slight variations.  I have been to underground BBQ feeds in the Caribbean, Hawaii, and here at home.  At Pamplin Grove there is a permanent place for the pit.  Meat is wrapped in various coverings-sometimes holding the seasonings.  It is done similar to the Hawaiian style of cooking a pig underground.  You cover it all up and let it slow cook with the wood heat.  You can put a large piece of meat into the pit (such as a whole pig) or can do multiple cuts/types of different meats at the same time.  The results are usually fabulous--a juicy, tender finished piece of meat.  Since it takes some work and coordination of the cook and fire tenders, most people only do this for special events.  And this event qualifies!! :lol:
